Welcome to Friends of Progressive Judaism
This year FPJ is supporting three projects in Israel promoted by IMPJ. They are important and exciting developments and we invite your Synagogue to include one or more of them in your High Holyday appeal to your members.
Kiryat Yovel is a Southwestern suburb of Jerusalem, built in the early 1950s to house new immigrants. The Haredi are attempting to take control of the area but many local Progressive Jews are resisting this and, amongst other activities, they are opening a kindergarten. Although the local municipality is cooperating to a limited degree, additional funding is urgently needed to ensure this essential facility becomes a reality. This is FPJ 's first beneficiary.
In the modern democratic state of Israel it is almost beyond belief not only that women can face the indignity of being forced to sit at the back of public transport buses but that the ultra orthodox are demanding that this segregation should be extended to more bus routes. This is one of the most obvious examples of the many difficulties women in Israel have to contend with. FPJ is making "Empowering Women in Israel" the second beneficiary of our appeal. In addition to challenging the anachronistic male domination of public transport "Empowering Women in Israel"
works tirelessly to promote Bat Mitzvah for women of all ages.
The IMPJ's pre-army Mechina program. operates five afternoon and evenings a week, enabling young volunteers to support children, the elderly, Holocaust survivors, young people and others in need of care in the mixed Jewish-Arab city Jaffa, alongside a program offering Jewish learning, acquaintance with the Land of Israel and the acquisition of leadership skills. This is FPJ 's third beneficiary. I look forward to your agreement to include FPJ as one of the charities in your High Holyday appeal.
